Tucked away in a row of shop houses on Bishan Clover Way lies Edo Ichi, a Japanese restaurant with an upscale menu. In this food review, we tried their mini fried chicken and unagi rice bowl set.

Both rice bowls were presented in mini bowls and had simple yet appealing presentations. The rice was fluffy, chewy, and plentiful, complemented perfectly by the delectable toppings. The unagi was beautifully roasted and coated in sweet, rich unagi sauce. The sauce paired perfectly with the rice, providing a delicious gravy. The unagi itself came in two thick and tender strips that were caramelized and elegant.

The chicken katsu don was similarly delicate in preparation. The chicken chunks were juicy and savory, with the crispy crust softened just the right amount. The stirred eggs on top had soft, jelly-like whites and gooey, slightly runny yolks, providing an extra dimension of flavor to the dish. Topped with chopped spring onions and seaweed strips, the entire chicken cutlet rice bowl was addictive and varied.

The chawanmushi was beautifully made, with a soft, jelly-like texture and added mushrooms and fishcake slices. The dish was briny yet mellow, and it paired perfectly with their miso soup. The soup was somewhat salty but full of richness, and the crunchy seaweed was a nice touch.

The cozy ambiance, complete with relaxing music, and friendly, swift service made our dining experience at Edo Ichi a pleasant one. However, it’s worth noting that water costs $1.50.

Overall, for $26, the spread was harmoniously put together with top-quality ingredients, but quantity was somewhat lacking. If you’re in the area and looking for something to eat, consider trying the chicken and eel set at Edo Ichi Japanese Cuisine.
