Nestled within Geylang and along Sims Avenue, is where a famous wanton noodle stall has resided since 1964. That is a long long time for a hawker to operate. We definitely had to have a go at it for this wanton noodle food review.
At the corner of an old coffee shop we found Koung’s stall, with an almost out of place modern signage and queue numbering system. Greeted by a friendly auntie who took our orders swiftly as we finally got to make our order from the snaky lunch time queue.
As we dig into our wanton noodles, the aromatic noodles laden with pork lard was perpetual and effusive. Its sauce mix was slightly greasy but necessary for their distinctive identity and taste. Noodles were springy and chewy, covered beautifully with their gorgeously concocted sauce mix. Irresistible and addictive noodles that Koung’s wanton noodles’ hedonistic power that assaults the senses.
Char siew slices were rather sweet with savouriness to compliment. Handmade wantons were pleasantly mouthful and delightful with every bite. Quantity was sufficiently given that was definitely filling for any foodie. We got their dry version at $5, although they do have soup version. And if you feel it ain’t enough, you can get the extra noodle and ingredients at $8 a plate.
For those who drives, do note that it is a challenge to try and park legally. If possible plan ahead and park somewhere close and walk over when you decide to pay Koung’s wantan mee a visit.
Quality of Koung’s wanton noodle was without a doubt elegant and superior, that has been able to draw crowds over the decades. Yummilicious!
