Within the bustling Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre was a long queue towards Boon Kee Wanton Mee. It was also where YumzYumz was being introduced to. This is our food review of Boon Kee’s Wanton Mee.
The noodles that we got at Boon Kee were the usual mee kia, but the sauce was anything but common. Instead of the usual heavy handed oyster sauce, the sauce mix at Boon Kee had a unique twist, which alleviated the overall taste of the sauce mix with the noodles. They must have a secret ingredient that mixed incredibly well with the usual suspects. Nevertheless, it was out of the norm, savoury and tasty.
We got three plump wantons that were decent and had were slightly pepperish. Along came a fried wanton, which was more of a garnish than anything, as nothing worthy can be spoken of it.
It is finally the char siew’s turn and quite frankly, the char siew slices were nothing short of terrible. They were sliced thinly, texture was as tough as it could be, and tasted almost blandly. It was almost a disgrace to call these pieces char siew. What a shame.
Luckily, we ordered their fried dumplings as side dish and it definitely made up for their total char siew failure. For 5 pieces at $5, each fried dumpling was extra plump fillings, crispy on the outside, juicy and scrumptious on the inside. The filling was bursting with flavour and juicy bits.
At $3.50 a plate of wanton noodles, it was indeed a satisfying meal, aside from their unforgivable char siew slices. Boon Kee however does serve up some wickedly amazing fried dumplings.
