Looking for spicy food? How about SiChuan style grilled fish at Chong Qing Grilled Fish 重庆烤鱼. YumzYumz tried out their spicy numbing patin fish and here is our food review of it.

Placing our order on their ordering website on our mobile phone was slightly confusing, as there were a number of combinations. In the end, we chose their Spicy Numbing style, which was stated as their SIGNATURE. So it has got to be fantastic and the best among the rest.

Next was to choose the type of fish. And Patin fish was stated as RECOMMENDED on the menu. So naturally we went with it.

Then we got to the other sides. Here is the list of items we got.

    Patin Fish : $44
    Fried Beancurd Skin : $5.80
    Thick Vermicelli : $3
    Black Fungus : $3
    Enoki Mushroom : $4.80
    King Oyster Mushroom : $4.80
    Lunchon Meat : $4.80
    Pork Slices : $5.80
    Instant Noodles : $3

Our total bill came up to about $100.

The whole order was served within 10 minutes, which was pretty swift considering their busy weekend dinner crowd. Everything was in the “pot”, except for the instant noodles.

Since we ordered Spicy Numbing style, and Mild Spicy level, it was natural to expect a certain level of numbness to the taste buds.

Alas… It was far worse than we expected.

After 3 biteful of fish and other ingredients, our mouths we totally numb. No other flavour and taste could be felt besides the spicy numbing torment. Luncheon meat? No taste. Mushrooms? No taste. Fried beancurd skin? Absolutely tasteless except numbing fiery spiciness.

Chili seeds were laden all over the top of the fish. Grilled fish skin was absolutely amazing. Even with the numbing agony of numbness in our mouth, the aroma of the skin was still nice and smokey. The flesh of the patin fish was comparably delicious. Silky, smooth, soft.

Sadly, the pungent and fiery soup base was totally over-powering for our liking. The amount of sichuan peppercorn used has got to be pretty substantial.

Even our Iced Japanese Green Tea (sugar free) was not enough to rescue the situation.

The best part of the meal was perhaps the quality of the fish, as well as the instant noodles on the side, simple and tasty.

Perhaps it would be a great item to order if you are one who can stomach such repulsive numbing of the taste buds till nothing can be tasted. But for the rest, we would recommend trying out other flavours, saving yourselves from the misery that we went through.
