Holland Drive Market is one of Singapore’s most popular hawker centers, offering a wide variety of food options. Shima’s Kitchen’s nasi lemak is one of the most sought-after dishes, with plates selling out within just a few hours. As avid foodies, we decided to try this famous nasi lemak for ourselves to see if it lived up to the hype.

Our first impression upon receiving our order was that the coconut rice lacked the strong fragrance typically associated with nasi lemak. Additionally, the consistency of the rice was clumpy and not as fluffy as we had hoped. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the fried turmeric chicken wing, which was crispy and packed with savory flavor. The chicken wing was undoubtedly the highlight of the dish.

On the other hand, the egg was slightly rubbery and not as soft as we would have liked. However, the chili sauce was lovely and aromatic, pairing perfectly with the rice. As usual, we ordered a begedil with our nasi lemak, but it was a bit of a letdown. The begedil was dry on the inside and small in size, especially considering its $1 price tag. However, the portion size of the nasi lemak was generous and reasonably priced at $3.50 per plate.

Despite the inconsistencies in the dish’s quality, what stood out was the friendly and helpful service we received from the aunties at Shima’s Kitchen. They were always willing to answer any questions we had and went above and beyond to ensure we had a pleasant dining experience.

Overall, while there is room for improvement, such as the consistency of the rice and the quality of the egg and begedil, Shima’s Kitchen’s nasi lemak is an affordable comfort food that fills the tummy. It’s easy to see why it’s a hot seller, thanks to its low price and generous portion size. If you’re on a budget and looking for a satisfying meal in the Holland Drive area, we recommend giving Shima’s Kitchen a try.
