Fancy a variant of french fries? How about mapo fries that we tried at Fat Po. Not exactly the usual french fries, but lets take quick look at how we thought of it in this food review.

Instead of golden brown potato shreds, Fat Po’s version of their mapo fries was made with fried tau-kwa strips, topped with mapo ragu, grated mozzarella cheese and spring onion. Tau-kwa strips were tough but chewy on the outside, squishy and soft on the inside. Almost bland to the taste buds, offering mostly texture in every bite. Mapo ragu was savoury, chunky and meaty, with slight heat to it, complementing well to the fried tau-kwa. However, in terms of good combination, it was far from a happy marriage. The mapo ragu with cheese and spring onions wasn’t clinging onto the tau-kwa, dropping off easily each time we tried dipping in or even scooping. Not the best fusion in our opinion.

Priced at $8.80, Fat Po’s mapo fries quantity wasn’t exactly what we expected, and quality was meh at best. Not something we would order again.
