Located within the bowels of Woodlands industrial area, Mei Ren Yu had an inconspicuous stall front, but with a snakey queue on a weekday lunch time. It even had a longer queue than the usual favourites of chicken rice or economical rice. Let’s take a look at the main item they had on their menu that was attracting the crowd, fried fish soup.
There was a choice of ban mian, U mian, or thick vermicelli noodles, and we went along with the latter which is usually the popular choice.
Soup was acceptably thick and aromatic, with subtle hints of ban mian or U mian being cooked in the same pot, the floury taste. Flavour was somewhat mixed, but ample and suffice to say it was tasty and soul warming.
The main kicks came in the form of meaty, savoury fried fish chunks. They were somewhat much more savoury, not to the point of salty, but rather, sweet and deep savouriness. Each was more than a full bite-size chunk, and there were about 5 huge ones.
Generously placed on top was a handful of crispy greasy deep fried egg mash, almost equivalent to zai er, or soya bean curd skin. It was so yummy that a few customers ahead of us ordered for extra egg mash to be added.
At $4.80 for a standard order of fried fish soup with bee hoon that we got, it was an absolutely generous portion, luscious and delectable fried fish and satisfying deep soup. No wonders on why their business was so amazing, especially with their warm and friendly greetings with every customer.
