What to eat at Jewel? How about trying out Tai Er? With over 300 over outlets in China, it has become a recognized brand. Opening their outlet in Jewel Changi Airport, we tried out their signature dish of sauerkraut fish in this food review.

As it was served in a gigantic plate, the waiter shouted some chinese phrase or idioms which wasn’t clear but sounded energetic. Perhaps it was their signature way of serving up their signature dish, but definitely incoherently done. LOL

Their signature sauerkraut fish comes at $48, $68, $88. We got the $68 version, and the amount of sliced fish were quite a fair bit, enough for 4 to 5 pax serving. Fish slices were tender and smooth, delicate to the touch and breaks easily, while taste was subtly savoury.

The whole dish was filled with oil, grease, dried chili, peppercorn, herbs, oil and more oil. It was so greasy, probably half of its depth was oil. We added enoki mushroom, chinese asparagus at $3 each, but with all the greasy action going on, it was impossible to enjoy the individual items. Spiciness level was not customizable, and comes in default, which was tolerable enough for us.

There was a drink station, where we get to brew our own dried tangerine or roselle juice, which came in individual packages. Sweet and refreshing to complement the greasy signature sauerkraut fish…

As for their service, we felt that they tried too hard to be on haidilao‘s standard. They would explain where the hidden drawer of napkins, and wipes were, where we can charge our mobile phones. But at the speeding bullet rate the waitress was talking, it was almost impossible to comprehend, especially when our mandarin ain’t as fluent. Perhaps she was rushing to get to other tasks, but neverthless, none of them were rude.

Do take note that you must have a reservation as they do not take walk-in. Do visit their Facebook page or this link to place a reservation.

In summary, Tai Er’s sauerkraut fish was somewhat unique in its own way, but definitely an overpriced dish.
