Looking for a unique dining experience in Jewel Changi Airport? Tai Er, a recognized brand from China with over 300 outlets, is worth checking out. We tried their signature dish, sauerkraut fish, and here’s what we thought.
The dish comes in three sizes: $48, $68, and $88, and we opted for the $68 version. When the dish arrived, we were impressed by the generous amount of tender, flavorful fish slices served. The sauerkraut fish was subtly savory and enjoyable, but quite greasy, with half of its depth being oil. The spiciness level was fixed, but tolerable. The dish was filled with dried chili, peppercorn, herbs, and more oil. We added enoki mushroom and Chinese asparagus, but it was hard to enjoy them amidst all the greasiness.
To balance out the greasiness, Tai Er offers a drink station where you can brew your own dried tangerine or roselle juice. These sweet and refreshing drinks complement the sauerkraut fish well and provide a nice break from the greasiness.
As for the service, the staff were friendly and helpful, but seemed to try too hard to be on par with Haidilao’s standard. The waitress spoke at a rapid pace, making it difficult for us to comprehend, especially as our Mandarin wasn’t fluent. Despite this, the staff were never rude.

Although a bit pricey, the dish offers a generous serving of tender, flavorful fish slices. Just be aware that it can be quite greasy and spicy.
