While famous for its flaming display of ramen showmanship, YumzYumz visited Menbaka and tried out their “charcoal” fried chicken thigh. This is our food review of its Charcoal Karaage.

This charcoal karaage was recommended to us as one of the MUST try item. In fact, a quick looked around and the rest of the diners had a plate of this on their tables. So good meh?? Black black fried chicken only, really that good? Definitely must try.

And so our order came and it was piping hot. ITs exterior was jet black, but not burnt and seemed to be some form of marinate. Regardless of how they managed to make it that black, it didn’t taste burnt/charred. There weren’t any distinct taste or flavour, just aesthetically unique.

Despite it looking bone dry, it’s interior was moist, juicy, tasty, and dipping with the shoyu sauce elevated it’s flavour.

For 5 pieces of Menbaka’s In-House Charcoal Karaage at $9.90, it wasn’t THAT unique, but still an enjoyable side dish to go along with it’s fiery ramen.
