Ang Mo Kio Central’s hawker centre is home to Lim Hai Sheng’s famous carrot cake. YumzYumz recently had the chance to sample their pan-fried white carrot cake, and we’re sharing our thoughts:
The skilled chefs expertly fried the carrot cake cubes, resulting in a delicious dish. Although not as aromatic as the ultimate carrot cake in Bukit Timah, it was still enjoyable. The ratio of eggs to carrot cake was just right, and the addition of chai poh (preserved radish) gave every bite a satisfying crunch. The chefs pan-fried the carrot cake and eggs perfectly, creating a crispy texture without being overly oily.
For only $2 per plate, we received a small “square” piece (as the auntie divides the batch of carrot cake into squares) and a serving of their spicy chili sauce. This dish makes a great accompaniment to other hawker delicacies.
However, be prepared to wait 5-10 minutes if the carrot cake runs out, and be mindful of the strict auntie.
In conclusion, while Lim Hai Sheng’s carrot cake may not be the best in town, it’s still worth trying if you’re in the area. The dish is skillfully fried with a balanced ratio of egg and chai poh, and the price is reasonable.
