Carrot cake at Zion Riverside Food Centre. Do you get black or white carrot cake at Lau Goh Teow Chew Chye Thow Kway? We got both types in one for this carrot cake food review.
First off, do take note for those who do not know is that the owner Uncle Peter, is partially deaf, so is his wife who tends the stall front. So please do not lose your temper when they do not reply you. Point to the item on the menu that you want, the amount and whether you want chili or not. There is a signage that states :
Dear customers,
Uncle Peter is partially deaf, so he can’t hear you. Due to the COVID-19 situation, he also can’t read your lips to take your order since everyone has to wear a mask.
Please help Uncle Peter by pointing at the menu to indicate your order. Thank you for your understand and patience!
Now that we got that out of the way, let’s talk food.
Their carrot cake has no lard & pork, and only vegetable oil used. So the lack of pork lard aroma would be lacking, but think on the positive side, it is healthier. However, the perfumed fragrance from the laboriously fried carrot cake was definitely accentuating. Looking at how Uncle Peter did his frying was a treat, almost as if he was doing a piece of artwork, and mesmerizing.
The black carrot cake, or rather fried radish cake, was evenly coated with sweet dark soy sauce, caramelized from all the frying, along with a generous ton of eggs. Same goes to the white carrot cake which was savoury, intricate and had a pleasant granular texture from the ample amount of cai poh (preserved radish) within. A downside would probably be the base kway or cake, which they do not make themselves. Kway was not chewy nor had the enjoyable mouthful experience. But taste was definitely yummilicious, with fish sauce and strong emitting garlic fragrance. We got the $5 order size and it was a huge amount, great for sharing or even as a main on its own.
Orders ranges from $5 to $6, $8, $10.
Such generous amount of egg and delicious taste and aromatic creation of good food, Lau Goh Teochew Chye Thow Kway carrot cake is one item we highly recommend when you visit Zion Riverside Food Centre.
