Chinese New Year is coming! Time for some bakkwa shopping! We are getting Bee Cheng Hiang’s new limited edition Applewood Sliced Pork flavour for this Bakkwa review.
Marketed as jucier and more succulent, smokey bbq aroma and using U.S imported applewood. We thought it wasn’t exactly jucier or more succulent. In fact, bakkwa aren’t succulent. But it was definitely extra smokey and much richer in its bbq aromatics. It had the deep and rich complexity that assaults the senses. Greasy for sure with a pleasant sheen, for what kind of bakkwa it will be if it doesn’t come with grease and extra calories. Each slice was somewhat thick but still tender. Not as tender as minced meat version, but still tenderlicious. Sweet for sure but subdued by its briny and smokey flavour that made us salivate.
As CNY approaches, prices has increased along with the GST. 600g comes at $46.80, while 1kg at $78.
If you are thinking of getting it for gifting or for yourselves, do give Bee Cheng Hiang 美珍香 – Applewood Sliced Pork Bakkwa a try.
