Fancy some Penang nasi kandar in Singapore? We were at Pasir Ris Central Hawker and tried out Ah Miao’s Kitchen’s version of Penang Indian fusion of nasi kandar for this food review.
Ah Miao’s nasi kandar curry gravy was gorgeously thick and hit all the right spicy notes for the fiery yet creamy texture. Mixed that in with their tumeric rice and it was good enough on its own. Tumeric rice wasn’t overtly flavoured but subtle and ample to appreciate the golden yellow spice aroma. Plently of sides such as their pickled achar which was refreshing and appetizing to compliment the spicy curry gravy. Roasted peanuts and ikan bilis were crunchy and just a joy to mix all of the ingredients together for a mouthful of everything. Others like a whole boiled egg and flat papadam was given to round it up.
Chili sauce was slightly runny but held nicely with chunks of onions and ikan bilis. It was slightly sweet and married marvelously with the kandar spicy thick gravy.
Chicken wing was slightly underwhelming as it was slightly tough on the skin and not crispy, although its flesh was tender and savoury.
Quantity and a variety of ingredients was definitely more than we expected for a huge bowl of nasi kandar at $4. Their thick and spicy kandar curry gravy was definitely the key element that made us love this dish at Ah Miao’s Kitchen.
